This is probably one of the best questions ever asked.
I think most people feel that the choice is between the lesser of two evils. Very few decent, intelligent people run, because
(1) It requires a love for power
(2) It requires some degree of willing to get your hands dirty
(3) It does not pay very well (the ethical portion of your pay, that is)
So, how do you fix it? That's the problem, because the politicians themselves are the ones deciding the rules. To get better politicians, they are the ones that need to change the rules. They would have to make the playing field better for the new entrants and they are unlikely to do that.
They would probably be happy to increase their own salaries, but public scrutiny will not accept that.
Last but not least, the voters have a responsibility, too. To educate themselves using all available information to make the best choice. Which I believe goes exactly to your "Wake Up" call.

Some people were to afraid of changing the president during the war. Also a lot of people still had faith that GWB was doing the right thing. In all honesty he could have handled things differently and so could his staff. It's not just him that is in the wrong. Dick Chaney got away with shooting a man, other people in the white house have dirty politics on their backs, leaks to the press, and not stopping this war, these are some of the downfalls to this term. He is in my opinion just like his father picking fights with people and seeing where it gets him, and JR. is just finishing what his daddy started. He is a very bad choice that majority of the American people regret. I didn't vote for him, but I'm still at fault for not helping to get him out of power. In some way we all are. This term we have to make things right and set the bar for the new president. There needs to be changes in this country and the foundation of what really matters needs to be more important than the issues at hand right now. I could go on and on but I think I've said my peace.

Money talks. If you can support the most humble and hardworking candidate with a serious background of getting things, done, and you backed it with everyones knowledge of his/her good work ethic, and you campagined in one of the most populated cities in the country with a budget of 5 million you would probably get 1/5 of the votes. The only thing we have is choosing the best of the worst. Last time we entered a war and the pres. got all of the young Catholics pissed so they motivated their friends, who motivated their friends. I mean, lets be honest. It not like Kerry was agressive enough to handle matters, and well, we fell for the same trick. Rulers, and dictators have been doing this since the dawn of time. When the people are about to mobilize start crap with other countries and threaten peace. OOOOoohhohhh, Jerks.

Because of closed minded, ignorant voters who think that religion is the most important aspect of any candidate who is running. I live in Georgia and most people here voted for him just because he is against abortion and a Christian. They have no idea what the difference is between a democrat and a republican. In fact, lots of these people who voted for bush are poor and get support from the Govt. in some way. I know this because I worked as a DFCS caseworker and my clients were all for Bush!

It takes a certain kind of person to want the power that comes with elected office. Most decent sorts stay far away, there is more $$ to be made in the private sector and then you can control the politicians.

Because of money. The new nobility in our country want to keep the "Lords" in power. It is not until they are elected for the first time that we see their true colors, then it is too late, since in is almost impossible to vote out an incumbent. It is a closed club, and they don't let just anybody in, unless they are forced to by public outcry.
They way to stop it is to take away all their goodies and perks.Because it is a part time job, pay them minimum wage. Then take away the platinum pensions they give themselves. Stop allowing them to vote themselves pay raises. Make them work for a living like the rest of us.

That's not matter of George Bush. It matters is he a Republican or a Democrat. If for example republican candidate will be a chimpanzee all republicans vote for him. Same things with democrats. I don't like it but this is mostly how works.

We usually end up voting for the "lesser of two evils". The people who would really be good at the job are too smart to want it.

Haven't voted since I declared myself FREE!
My fellow Americans, God gave you life. You signed NO CONTRACT at birth. You were indoctrinated at school and church to become cogs in the wheel of State.
This is the greatest LIE ever transmitted from generation to generation.
The time to be alive is NOW.
The time to be free is NOW.
Fear will rob you of ALL potential.
Soon God will come to set things straight. One of the first things He'll do is dissolve ALL governments.
Have something to show for all your days.
COURAGE. JOY. A lust for learning. A generous heart.
Badda-BING!
