That's a difficult question. Economically the Soviets were Communists, and Marxist Communists with Lenin as their main influence. Politically they were probably no different then any other totalitarian regime.

The United States is economically capitalist and influenced by the ideas of liassez-faire (hands off) and the progressive ideas of early 1900s through the New Deal period of the Roosevelt administration. Politically, the United States is a Democratic Republic, or a Representative Democracy. Like a true "democracy", we allow every citizen over a certian age the right to vote, but unlike a true "democracy" only a relatively small number of people actually serve in the government, which developed largely from a shared history with England and knowledge of Classical Greece and Rome.

One: The Soviets were NEVER communists. They used the label, for propaganda purposes, but even a cursory glance of the Communist Manifesto will show that the few nations are further from Communism then China and Russia.

Second: We call ourselves a Democracy, but that isn't true either. Democracy implies 'one man, one vote', which would be nice, but cumbersome. We are also supposedly governed by our representatives in Washington. Also not true, unless you happen to be powerful wealthy person, as all of Washington, regardless of party, has but one constituent, Big Money.

What we really are, is s@rewed. Sorry...
