Make sure everyone is having fun without horseplaying.
Switch jobs around and cross-train whenever possible.
Make sure your employees know that you are there for them.
Be there for them.
Don't make them do something you wouldn't do yourself. That doesn't mean you have to do it as long as they believe you would :-)
If it gets non-stop busy for hours, then sometimes it's best to just say 'Everyone stop and take 5'. 5 minutes won't matter to a customer who knows your busting butt and it will refresh your employees and they'll be able to come back a little less stressed and the next thing you know, the night will be over.
If your crew does an exceptional job then reward them for it. I used to bring my kitchen crew and/or front end crew a big cookie from the mall with 'Thanks For The Great Job' written on it. You do that and they will always be loyal to you and do the job that needs to be done with the least bit of resistance.
Never down-talk them. Never say 'you can be replaced' because if you want them to be exceptional you must treat them exceptional. At the same time, don't let them get away with anything either. Be the boss and they'll respect you for it. This way, when a supervisor visits, you won't have to run around making sure everyone is doing everything correct. Because if they do it correct all the time, then they'll be doing correct if anyone gives you a 'surprise visit'. good luck with the promotion :-)

I'm a Pub Manager and I get on really well with my Staff they all know I'm approachable and can talk to me about anything in confidence and most of them do.
I always instill in them that we are a team and we work together and they are always "asked " to do things never "told" because I treat them all the way I would wish to be treated.

We have some good laughs but they know how far to go and the job always come first to us all.
There is usually a large staff turnover in this type of business but the service length here ranges from 6 to 15 years so I must be doing something right. Well done on your promotion and start as you intend to go on,
Lay down the rules and what you expect of everyone be approachable but authoritative and most of all enjoy it.

I am a bar manager, and I feel as if everyone gives me the respect I deserve....remember a happy employee is a good employee, they show up for work, do their job well, dont gripe (too much) and genuinely like what they do. As a supervisor treat people as equals, ALWAYS discipline in private, and be a supervisor that your employees are comfortable to go to when they have a problem.

I am a bar manager, and I can say I get along with most of my bar tenders. BUT there are two that if it were up to me they'd both be out of a job. So these two do not really like me.

a good manager adapts to their staff instead of making the staff adapt to them...
survey everyones stregents and play to them....
and just set very clear guidelines early on to help prevent problems later... remember u are the boss not the friend atleast from punch in to punch out.

Im not the boss's boss, but i am a manager....and Im the one that everybody likes!
Communication with the people you work with is key...make sure they understand boundaries, and that they understand that you are easy to talk to, and someone who is good conflict resolution!

I manage a Cold Stone Creamery. I'm VERY laid back until you piss me off. Just do your job and I stay off your ***.

Just be yourself. Keep things running properly and it will all be O.K. Remember....keep your employees happy and you'll have a happy restaurant. But don't let them walk all over you either. Good luck, it's a trial and error kind of thing.
