Obviously, a nice restaurant is a better place than an Applebees, and a big city is probably better then a small town.

Ok, this is a long shot, but in 1984, in San Francisco, I made an average of $15/hr including tips. That was 5 more than I made as a waitress. The base pay was $5/hr when min wage was $3.35. I worked on an elite all-ladies crew at restaurants in North Beach as well as special special events and private parties. It was about the best money for a college student that you could make legally. Some of the folks also had side drug businesses going, but that was a whole other thing....not my gig. Some parties were really lucrative. One night another chick and I parked one car the whole night (a Rolls) and made $100 each in tips. It was a really super cool job overall - lots of great exercise running up and down the hills and it was everyones complete social life + I got to meet a bunch of celebrities.

My boyfriend valets at a 5 star hotel in west palm beach and brings home about 1200 dollars a week. (a 40 hour work week.) It's great money, plus he loves driving all the fancy cars.
