I dont smoke but I was wondering. We found this lost dog one day and the poor thing smelled like an ashtray. We found his owner but I hated handing the dog over to him. I wonder if it causes cancer and emphysima and other problems in animals like it does people. It doesnt seem very fair to the animal.

I didnt keep the dog. I said "I hated to hand the dog over" but I still handed the dog over because it wasnt my dog. The owner was a nice guy and was so upset his dog was missing.

Yeah, no kidding. It BLOWS my mind when I see parents smoking around their children. Like the have no conscience. They NEED to start ticketing people when they see them smoking around children.

Yes of course it affects them the same way, they have lungs too. You see lung cancer in animals, which is why it makes me crazy when I smell cigarette smoke on animals. People smoke around their children though, so what hope have we got of saving animals from it when people don't even mind killing themselves or their kids with it.

Hiya, I'm a house rabbit owner and a smoker. The answer to your question is YES smoke can affect rabbits! They have very sensitive respiratory systems! I never, ever smoke inside the house anyway, but when I go in the garden for a cigarette bunny comes out with me - but he won't come anywhere near me whilst I am still smoking! With their heightened sense of smell it smells even worse to them than it does to humans ;) So ask your guy in the basement to keep it away from your bunnies! These days its common courtesy to take the smoking outside...its not fair on friends or either the human OR furry variety!

I have never heard any studies on this but I am sure second hand smoke does not do any animal any good. However, I would think a dog, or other pets that spend most of their time on the ground, it would get a tiny percent less exposure. Birds, cats or lap dogs would probably get the worst.
I smoke, but only outdoors away from non-smokers and pets. My addiction is bad enough for me, why should I inflict it on others?

Call an animal center and check with them. Theywill know if you should turn ther owner in or not. You need to give the dog back to the owner for now untill you find out from the center because it's not your dog.

Secondhand smoke is deadly to people and even worse for animals. I once read that a smoker's dog will be more effected by the toxins than a smoker. =(
