New dishwashers use approx 4 qts with each fill, Old dishwashers with a double panel (door and a lower panel) use 7-9 qts per fill. All dishwashers call for at least 120F degrees at your faucet. It takes at least 120 degrees to effectively melt the detergent. If you check your manual most will tell you how much water is used by your machine. It will also tell you how many times it fills, depending on the cycle selected.

Find out if you have an electric dishwasher that heats water itself. Most dishwashers do heat water.

If you have a dishwasher, but it doesn't heat water, who probably want your water temperature to be near 140°F.
If you have a dishwasher that does heat water, your hot water temperature should probably be 120°F.
If you don't have an electric dishwasher, consider setting your hot water at 120° and heating rinse water on the stove when you wash dishes by hand.

yes, I believe they say set your hot water heater to at least 140f or 150f. To help clense the dishes.
