The only possible escape for folks in the town was by sea. They had to be far away a few days BEFORE the ash and gas fell. Many did escape. There MAY have been some survivors in the last moments. The eruption was not totally sudden and utterly cataclysmic.

First leave early. The Volcano was erupting for about 20 hours before people started dropping like flies. It had a long history of erupting with harmless releases of smoke so the people were not afraid of this one. Next get to the Sea, if you could have sailed away from Pompeii you would have had a shot at surviving. Ground travel would have been slow and the roads would have been tough to travel with all the pumice falling around you. Last keep your head up, the number 1 killer in Pompeii was the poison gas flows that killed people from the ground up. The higher you can get the safer you would be from the gas.

Pliny the Younger gives a good account and says 'escape was impossible except from by sea' but later in his narrative when the pumice is falling and the buildings are falling down his uncle tries to leave by sea but 'finds the waves too rough'.

Sea would have been the best escape route, crossing the Bay of Naples to Micenum, but escape would only be possible early on. It apparently went dark for two days when the ash was falling, so remember to factor that in.

Find a good source and read about the volcano eruption at Pompeii. Then make some judgments for yourself. A good book would be a great source.

Chow!!

Well, if you waited until the actual eruption, there's no way to escape. The ash flow is way too fast and would catch you before you got very far.

Some that did escape left early. As soon as the mountain started to steam, get as far away as you can.

The trouble was those that did run, ran inland, which was towards the eruption, not away from it. They also didn't realise exactly what was going to happen - it was completely outwith anything in previous human experience. They thought they might be able to propiate the gods. They also thought they would be safe if they hid in their houses, not realising that such would not protect them from the heat of the pyroclastic cloud and that the amount of ash being ejected would cause roofs to cave in etc.

I would wear a gas mask and helmet, then leave as soon as Mt. Vesuvius erupted, and board a ship commanded by Pliny the Elder.
