OMG! I think I was born in the wrong time period! I LOVE the 50's! There are MANY styles that came out of the 50's that are still very in and very present in today's times! A good reference point ar movies like "Grease" and "The Outsiders". The most influential impact that clothing from the 50's had on American life was the sterotype of the social status of a certain person.

Men: When it came to richer men, the usual garb consisted of rolled up khakis ("high waters"), socks, patent leather loafers, and a sweater over a button-down, collared shirt. The madras print on collared shirts was very big then, and still is now. Hair was generally short, well-kept, or comb to the side. As far as men in the lower rungs of the social ladder, the "greaser" look was most often deemed appropriate. Rolled up jeans (again....."high waters"), white socks, sneakers (typically), a white t-shirt and heavy leather jacket were the usual staples in a wardrobe. One of the most influential fashion icons that came out of this time period was the introduction of the Converse "Chuck Taylor" brand sneaker.

Women: For women, class was distinguished a lot through clothing. Higher classes mostly conformed to the "Sandra Dee/Olivia Newton-John" look. Poodle skirt, bobbysocks, cardigan sweaters, etc. were the usual staples. As for lower classes, they had the most effect on fashion today. There were several styles of clothing that came into the style scene that are still VERY prevalent today. Pedal pushers (capris), ballet flats, scarves (in the hair, on the wrist, neck, etc.), letterman sweaters, and flats are all fashion icons that came into style in this period that are VERY VERY much a part of today's wardrobes. Girls hair brought in many styles also. Ponytails, pigtails, and BIG up-do's were very prominent.

Do you mean "wear"? 'cuz if you mean "where" the question doesn't make sense. If you mean "wear" then look at http://home.att.net/~boomers.fifties.teenmag/1950s_fashion.html
