this is actually a common misconception about the universe. the universe seems to be finite yet has no boundary and no center. it may be something like the two dimensional surface of a sphere. nothing inside or outside the sphere exists for the surface. space-time originated in the big bang. the whole universe was the big bang, and everywhere in the universe was once the big bang. there is no "outside". to quote a dead writer, "there is no there, there".

Dear Jay:
I read your question and was more curious to find out who suggested to you that the Universe had an "edge?" As far as we know it goes on and on for more than 40 Billion Light Years. That is as far as we can "see" right now with our most sophisticated optical and radio telescope equipment. Beyond that point our equipment fails to give us any useful information. Maybe sometime in the near future a new technique will be developed that extends our vision range out to maybe 60 Billion Light Years. But, there is no edge out there, or other defining line that is the end of space. Where ever you picked that up, throw it away as useless garbage, because it is not true.

ah, that is the question, isn't it? i mean, the initial question has been is space is contained & therefore finite OR as some believe that space is infinite & goes on & on & on... i do not believe that space is infinite but rather areas that when approached, much like crossing over from one state to another, there are borders or barriers to be crossed. might be also likened to dimensions. we do operate in 4 dimensions that our human senses detect but on closer examination, i do believe that there are anywhere from 4 known to 24k unknown/unnamed dimensions. four dimensions, you ask? the four known & readily experienced is height, depth, width (and time). the other 22k? i'll leave that to you to discover & label. life's great & time is dynamic.

There is nothing. Not empty space, not void, nothing. Like the nothing you see through the eyes in the back of your head that you don't have.
