Use the order of operations. For #1, evaluate 5^2 and 3^2 as 25 and 9 respectively. you now have 25-15+2-9. Perform the addition and subtraction from left to right to obtain 25-15+2-9=10+2-9=12-9=3.

For #2, substitute 3 for x and 10 for y. You now have 12*3-6*10+11-9*3+7*10. Do the multiplications first to get 36-60+11-27+70. Now do the addidition and subtraction fro left to right to get 36-60+11-27+70=-24+11-27+70=-13-27+70=-40+70=30. These calculations are correct, but 30 is not on the list of possibilities. You probably wrote the problem down wrong or wrote the list of possibilities wrong.

1) 5^2 - 15+2-3 = 25 -15+2-3 = 9
2)12x-6y+11-9x+7y = x(12-9) + y(-6+7) + 11 = 3x+y+11
= 3(3)+(-10)+11 = 9-10+11 = 10

Remember order of operations -- PEMDAS (parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction).

1. 25 - 15 + 2 - 9
25 + 2 - 15 - 9
27 - 24 = 3

2. Use substitution
12(3) - 6(-10) + 11 - 9(3) + 7(-10)
36 - (-60) + 11 - 27 + (-70)
36 + 60 + 11 - 27 -70
107 - 97 = 10

5^2 -15 +2 -3^2 = 25 -15 + 2 -9 =1 = 3

12x -6y +11 -9x +7y
= 3x +y +11 = 3(3) +(-10) +11
=9 -10 +11 = 10
