Sorry for all you America-haters, but I would have to say the United States -- groundbreaking liberties, size and diversity, and almost unparalleled power and influence (rivalled only by the British Empire at its height). I would give Chinese civilization a close second just for being so large and long-lasting.

Other top scorers in my book would be Rome, France, Egypt, Aztecs, Japan, and Babylon (I'm probably forgetting someone important, though).

Whoops, I mentioned the British Empire, but didn't include it on my list!

The American Empire.

1) Strongest and most powerful military ever.
2) Greatest Constitution ever developed.
3) Greatest freedom granted to a mass people.
4) Greatest opportunities to pursue a career and dreams.
5) Has done more for mankind in the sciences, medicine, arts, and engineering.
6) Has done more for other countries with humanitarian and religious aid.
7) Most wealth ever obtained by a single country.
8) Highest standard of living and hygiene.

America is indeed the greatest empire to have ever existed. And it is indeed an empire... there's no denying it. Unfortunately, it is morons like EDDIE9551 (posted below) who will bring this great empire down.

It depends upon how you define "greatest". If your definition includes longevity and innovation, I would have to go with Egyptian civilization for these reasons:

1. The Egyptian civilization lasted over 2000 years. It started with the First Dynasty in ca 2920 BC and lasted until the 30th Dynasty which ended ca 330BC.

2. The Egyptians were the first to come up with:
a writing system
paper
monotheism (Akenatun)
a stable government
mass building projects

3. The Great Pyramid was the tallest structure in the world until the nineteenth century.

For these reasons, I feel that Egypt was the greatest civilization in the history of the world. All those civilizations that came after it did not last as long and, by and large, merely built upon Egyptian innovations and ideas.

India may be the oldest continuing civilization in human history, but it would be impossible to say which civilization was the greatest of them all.... It is true that the ancient Hindus made most of the inventions and discoveries in the areas of maths, science, astronomy and metaphysics.... They have also made significant contributions in the area of philosophy, arts and literature! But the Greatest civilization would also need to have a VERY powerful military.... I think the only time we ever hear about the Indian military might is when we talk about Alexander, the Greek king tried to invade India and suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of the Indians..... So, I would definitely place it WAAY up high.... My 3 greatest would be: 1) rome 2) India 3) Egypt

The United States of America. We've made more progress in technology and building cities in 200 years than many societies have done in thousands of years. We also value the individual and fairness.

"Reason being is this country's shift to fundamentalism. Science is taking a backseat to creationism and it will get to the point were science teachers will begin to suffer the same as abortionist have. Stem cell research may ort may not be the Next Big Thing but we wont find out as long as we choose to fund out scientists by our religious beliefs."

Oh please... if that was true, there wouldn't be a new call for Math and Science teachers across the country. And nobody is doubting evolution, everyone just wants ID in the classrooms as well. Every other science is the same. California is already invested billions into the stemcell research. Bush himself signed a bill funding stemcells. And by the way, it's not republicans that are blocking stem cell. Anti abortionists also join this because it's wrong to kill a baby.

So don't just blame one single group.

And why don't you vote to have your senator kicked out so you get one that is willing to fund stemcells? I already have fienstien and boxer

With out a doubt the Romans. Yes you may say the U.S. but keep in mind many, many aspects of daily life in the U.S. are derived from a connection to the Romans either conceptually or directly. Much more than any other culture.

The Roman Empire and Greeks. Romans and Ancient Greece gave much of the world what it has today.

France and Japan? What are you on??
Yes I agree that American has been the greatest so far but it's not going to be like that much longer.

Right now we are fighting two wars on credit. The main share of that credit is provided by China. This really weakens us, as does fighting 1 wars, one of which appears more and more unwinable.
Our budget has been slashed in every sector. We have so few border agents because their funding has been almost eliminated. Thanks to the budget cuts (read GW Bush) ANYONE and invade this country with, apparently, nothing ot stop them, but by God they tried to kill his dad, so this is all worth it.
The Chinese are poised to rule the world
I feel sorry for US.
