ok this might sound dumb i have a friend who has to remove his drive shaft to do universal joint replacement?
someone tould him he has to remove the cross member??
now i know back in the good old days the cross member held the transmission. why the heck would he have to remove it to get to the drive shaft? i thought you just unbolt it from the rear end slide it out? this is a split drive shaft with the carrier bearing?? hmm any answer out there would be great

ok we cant get the front to come off?
the book said somethhing about useing a brass punch to seperate it from the front ?? is there a trick to this thing? poor guy has been at it for 3 hours.

You don't have to remove any crossmember in that thing. The drive shaft on a Cherokee is as easy as they come to get off. Front and rear both.

If it is a 4 wheel drive their is a shaft for the front an the rear. I have had them out and no need to take the dross member out.

These certainly aren't the good ol' days mechanically speaking. Check your library for a book that can walk him through it. I know our library has repair manuals. They let you take 'em home for a 10 buck deposit that you get back when you return the book.
