Basic research tends to focus on fundamental questions without knowing when, or if ever, there will be a practical need for the answer. Perhaps at one point the discovery of the atom proton, electron, etc. might have been looked at in this fashion.
Applied research is focused on solving problems for which a need is already identified. It might be the drug which will cure a specific disease, or, in today's paper, new methods to produce ethanol without driving up the price of corn.
