Your question is loaded and ca be taken many ways. I love this question, watch how people answer, see which angle they take, Sex, Rape, Sl*t...
I say ( and have never worn one as a 6'3, 275 lbs man) from what I know from female freinds and ex Girlfriends it is an advertisment in comfort and style. Some pants and skirts require the lineless look. No one in a micro mini with a great shape to that reigon need be covered in lines. When ever Men see this we laugh. Women are the perfect combo of bueaty and shape, when the combine to create perfection a thong is a must. But don't let it show over the top at the lower back that is just plain Hoe-ish.
Thongs rule.

Why are you worried about advertising?
If you are wearing something that is putting your goods out there for all to see, then yes, it is advertising.
It's not like you have to wear full length robes or anything - (actually robes make me start wondering what you are covering up so it can have the same effect. )
But most people are very visually stimulated, so the more you show - assumptions are made.....

It can be...and it depends on how much of it you see and in what type of setting it is.
I work in the public eye, and can't stand it when I see a girl sitting down, and her thong is showing for all to see.
However, it would be totally suitable for certain types of activities and places.
Personally, I don't like to wear them..feel like I need to back into a corner and relieve some bunching.

Lets look at this from a different angle. Advertising sells. Nothting sell like word of mouth, however. Hmmm.

That depends on who your target audience is.
I have toddlers, so it's obviously not an advertisement for me.
