You didn't mention what grade level the project is for. I know as an elementary teacher if I were to assign a project for grade 2
to 5 there are a vast many ways of approaching this. I use to have my students do a family tree. I'd give them about 3 months to work on this. (Sept. through November) At the end of Nov. and all through Dec. they would have various other projects that were tied into the Ancestors Studies. One of them would be Family traditions for any time of year. Another biggie was our December Holidays that we celebrated and then right after Dec. Holiday in Jan. we would have an Ancestor Celebration Week. Grandparents and other Seniors would com e in to talk about their lives when they were young either in US or their country of origination. We would talk about Immigration, Ellis Island and even take a trip to the Statue of Liberty.
Perhaps if the assignment you are doing is a Poster the students or you may show Photos of ancestors, of clothing, pictures showing dancing, a map of the country their ancestors came from, recipes, Birth Certificates, written sheet of a ethnic song, list of holidays a Family Tree...etc.,
Perhaps a small flag of their country could be the center of the collage. You might also want to include photos of some beautiful architecture. Pictures of plants and particular animals that are found in theat country would also be great.
