Well I wanted to answer to correct what the second person said. Either format -R and +R has dual layer versions, so that is not the difference. The differences are in formats and are a bit technical for the average user, even I don't fully understand all the minute differences. The important thing to know is that any player or burner purchased in the last few years will most likely accept either, so it doesn't particularly matter which you buy. In my opinion the +R are slightly superior, but either will work.

Hi Kedi,
The DVD+R and DVD-R are competing formats much like the old VHS and Beta formats in video tapes. Today most drives are Hybrid and handle both formats. They are usually labeled DVD+/-R
Both +R and -R DVDs are available in both single and double layer and in R (write once) or RW (rewriteable)
The market for recordable DVD technology shows little sign of settling down in favor of either the plus or dash formats, which is mostly the result of the increasing numbers of dual-format devices that can record to both formats; it has become very difficult to find new devices that can only record to one of the formats. However, because the DVD-R format has been in use since 1997, it has had a five-year lead on DVD+R. As such, older or cheaper DVD players (up to 2004 vintage) are more likely to favor the DVD-R standard exclusively, and when creating DVD’s for distribution (where the playing unit is unknown or older) the DVD-R format would normally be preferable.
My personal experience has led me towards using the +R. It is slightly better at error handling so more tolerant of dirty or damaged media and also more tolerant to the subtle differences between players.

Both have the same size. Its just like a format war now with BlueRay and HDDVD. There were no industry standrds at the time of first optical disk delopent. many co. were competing . there were two fronts - or dash: devloped by Pioneer and supported by Apple, Sony. and other + supported by Philips, Dell, HP.
Technical Diffrence is that : - dash disk can only be written in one layer on the disk surface and the plus can be writen on multiple surface( dual layer). so plus disks can pack little more data than dash disks. so they are more expensive. but the -(dash) disks enjoy more compitability with standalone cd/dvd players. there is no any physical difference.
