It is said that the Reverse Osmosis Water Purification System is the Best because whereas in the commonly used Ultra Violet Light Purification System the Organisms ( bacterias as well as Viruses) are killed by the Rays yet their dead parts still remain in the supposedly potable water which might include Exotoxins/Endotoxins and thus reduces their safety. However, in the former system viz. Reverse Osmosis, the whole Organism is removed in Toto by the process of osmosis and so also the exotoxins/endotoxins along with it thus making the water absolutely safe for use.

Of course, the pre-treatment steps in both, Osmosis and Ultra Violet Rays are almost the same ie. different stages of Filteration which may vary marginally from manufacturer to manufacturer.

In your case as far as potable water is concerned you should settle for the Reverse Osmosis method, after assessing the water test-report by an independent,certifying-agency, if possible.

Regarding water for general use,the chlorinated system is still the best if chlorine is used in proper recommended amounts which is also used in majority of water-treatment units/plants.

Finally,it may be worthwhile to go in for a small water treatment plant overall, if you can afford it, externally ; and inside the house, Reverse Osmosis Method in the kitchen and for drinking purposes which will also take care of the chlorine used in your water-treatment plant.

A reverse osmosis system that will supply you with almost distilled water costs from 200 to 300 and you can install it yourself. This will give you about 5 gallons day of pure water. Drinking pure water is not as healthy as you would think. The contaminants are removed but so are other minerals. Soft water is bad for the heart as the minerals are protective and essential. I drink some from reverse osmosis and some from the tap. $5,000 is ridiculous, a waste of money, and if you drank distilled water all the time you will get sick. A water softener for washing clothes is something else and should go in the hot water line only. It uses a salt ion to replace other minerals in the water and would be bad for blood pressure if you drank it. Save yourself a bundle and just get a small under the sink system for making drinks and clear ice cubes.

The best would be the reverse osmosis system and if not that a charcoal inline filter to remove the odors from the water. Good luck.
