The starfish were from a beach trip my son encountered recently.

We have a small fish tank that has only 3 gold fish.

Starfish are saltwater creatures and putting them in with goldfish in a freshwater tank would be condemning them to a slow painfully excruciating death. Take them back to the ocean and release them or give them to someone with a saltwater tank.

Starfish = Saltwater
Goldfish = Freshwater

So basically no. Starfish are marine invertabrates so they would need saltwater. If you had an empty tank you could buy saltwater mix from a pet store and keep them but you would need to know what temperature range that particular species prefers and maybe have a heater or even a chiller (expensive!) if it cant live in room temperature water. Its best to leave wildlife in its natural habitat unless you can duplicate it at home. Though trying to keep a saltwater tank could be a valuble learning experience for your son :)

properly to start up cycling the tank i could use 3 chromis damsels, then whilst the tank is executed cycling upload a pair of clowns and a bubble anemone, a fox face rabbit fish, then wait some month, then upload a flame angel, then a hippo tang, wait a month or 2 then upload perchance a dwarf fuzzy lion fish and a few 3 greater effective purple hearth fish, then 2 weeks to a month if all is doing fantastic upload a dwarf stingray. it rather is tremendously solid stocking. ensure you have area for a sand mattress, and a stay rock platform with caves. solid information is those form of are reef risk-free.
