This happened before in the Dallas/Fort Worth area on Late February 2007.

A Dust Storm is made when winds as high as 70 MPH move some sand dunes and can carry a wall of dust as much as 1,525 M high. Dust storms can cause major airport delays and can often result in people suffering from respiratory problems and allergic reactions.

They can be caused many different ways. The most common are

-Strong winds being brought down from a severe thunderstorm in the desert to the surface that pick up dust and blows it in the direction it's headed. Phoeniz fore xample receives these regularly.

or

-Strong surface winds caused by a strong and tight pressure gradient (typically High Pressure) in the desert that pick up dust and blows it in a certain direction.

large ammounts of wind pick up and carry loose sand particles, thus creating a sand storm. this happens much more often in the desert than on a beach because of several things. the beach has moisture compacting the sand. the sand on the beach has people compacting the sand, and the sand on the beach isnt always moving and loosining itself up.
