Sorry, but g.reef is wrong. A seashell is just a compilation of minerals, such as calcium compounds. Of course you can't hear the ocean from a seashell. All you hear is blood from blood vessels in your ear, along with air that might be blowing around the shell. If you pick up a leaf, can you hear the forest? No. If you pick up a feather, can you hear birds? I sure hope not. I am a proud physics nerd, I would know (although I make no guarantee of my answers as a general rule).

You're hearing a combination of things all being reverberated and amplified in the sea shell. Mostly it's the blood flowing through your ear, but it's also the air that's moving in the shell as well. It only sounds like the ocean, but in reality it's not. You can also get a similar effect if you cup your hand and put it over your ear.

If you're listening to it FROM the beach, then yes, it is the ocean you are hearing. The sea shell just mixes up the sounds around you and sends them to your ear.

You can't hear the ocean through a seashell all you hear is the blood flowing through the veins in your ears.Unless you are actually at the beach and what you hear is the water.

you do no longer pay attention the sea/ocean. You pay attention a sound which you approximate to be the sea in simple terms via 'speeding' sound. The shell (conch) is formed in definitely a style of style as to amplify sounds. What you're certainly listening to is the sound of the blood passing via your carotid arteries as they take the blood up on your techniques. each each so frequently on the same time as that's quiet and you have relatively exerted your self, you may desire to pay attention this result with out the shell. you may desire to cup your end your ear to get an same result - yet basically on the same time as that's particularly quiet.

It is the sound of blood flowing through the blood vessels of your ear. It sounds like the ocean and since you are using a seashell, people put them together.

You can hear the sounds of blood circulating inside your ear since the sound is "held in" and contained.
