Call the police of course!! Was it a stranger who broke in, or do you have an idea who it might have been?? This sounds foolish, but send an IM or e-mail to your computer, the idiot who stole it just might be arrogant enough to answer it! I had a cell phone stolen once, and I called it. At first the person didn't answer, but finally the did and they screamed "WHAT??" like I was bothering them or something! Anyway, I ended up talking to them, and they agreed to drop the phone off annonymously at a restaurant where my friend worked. She actually showed up and left the phone at the Hostess Station!! I didn't care at that point about trying to catch the lady, I just wanted my phone back! There was lots of private stuff on it, including some photos that would've been pretty embarrassing for my boyfriend at the time!!! (Learned never to keep really "personal" stuff on the phone again!!)

You will need a serial number. If you got it, follow the instruction on how to report a theft here...
http://www.absolute.com/support/how-to-report-a-theft.asp
If you never wrote it down, take a look at the paperwork that came with it if you still have it, it might have that number in there somewhere.
I would also check local pawn shops and computer stores. May be the guy that stoled it sold it to them.
Without that Number there isn't much you can do unless you computer is very unique.
Goodluck.

first report it to the police then to your leasing office just in case other things like this are going on around your complex. Hopefully you have renters insurance in which case you can file a claim and get it replaced. if you choose to get another laptop be sure to install a tracking system so if this happens again. I'm not sure of the name of the tracking software but it is pretty much like a lo-jack system that people put on their cars but it's for computers. If you have this system on your laptop and it gets stolen or lost you can track it in real time and have a better chance of finding it.

in this order:
1) get very angry
2) get even angrier
3) tell the police
4) buy a new laptop
5) chase down the people who stole it and do nasty things to them
6) tell the police again they probably forgot from the last time.
7) make sure your apartment is secure so they don't steel it again
8) ask silly question and get many many silly answers. you should not have asked this in this section of Yahoo answers, this is for people who need help with their laptop, you do not have one, how can we help. this should have been posted in the crime section if there is one.

Notify the police..
Change your passwords on all of your accounts....
Not just financial but web sites and ISP internet mail accounts as well. Contact you ISP there may be a way to see when the last time your E-mail was down loaded.
Notify your credit card companies to be aware of unusual activity. Or have them reissue credit cards with new number to you.

Were you drinking or drugging the night before? Next time, make sure your doors are all locked !
Do you know what logic is? Logic is where if something is stolen, you have sense enough to report it to the police... how old are you?

report it stolen then next year write it off as a loss on your taxes! you have to have the police report to claim it in case you get audited! cause most likely they won't find who stole it! Good Luck!

Call the police and get a crime number.
If it was insured, quote the number to the insurance company.
If not, start looking for a new laptop.

The first thing you ought to do is to call the police, you moron! DUH! Then, if your laptop contains financial information, such as credit card and/or bank account information, you need to contact such financial institutions immediately. Do all that you can to protect yourself from identity theft.
Get another laptop also, if you can afford it. Make sure that it is password protected, so that not any Tom, Dick, or Harry can boot up your laptop, without the password.
