The costs of Iraq and Afghanistan aren't even included in the $481 billion the Pentagon demands for 2008, a 10 percent raise over this year. Total these figures up and Bush is asking for roughly $745 billion in defense spending, a higher number, when adjusted for inflation, than the entire cost of the Vietnam War.

Just pause and consider the size of that number. Three-quarters of a trillion dollars and Osama bin Laden is still at large, the Taliban are regrouping in Afghanistan and the US military is stuck in a civil war in Iraq.

"We have the largest Pentagon budget since World War II, but we are losing to an opponent in Iraq that spends less over an entire year than what we spend in one day," says Winslow Wheeler, a longtime defense expert at the Center for Defense Information.

Four defense analysts at the Security Policy Working Group recently awarded the government low or failing grades on virtually every aspect of the budget -- use of nation's resources (D), affordability (D), realism (D) and transparency (F). On only one criteria, advertising, did they award at A+, "for the Pentagon managing to convince Congress that the world's largest defense budget is too small."
The question now is whether this Congress will take the bait?

It has very little to do with Bin Laden & a lot to do with the US defense industry being the largest industry in America that employs millions of Americans & gets hundreds of congressmen/women re elected year after year. And that's only part of it. The Defense industry is much like US farm industry in that it basically is subsidized by the US Govt. or "corporate welfare" only the US Defense industry is much larger & gets much more tax money than the US farming industry.

You get a minus for not putting that in the form of a question and I'm sure there was one in there, what is it? It's only the hard core republican supporters still standing with the President on his Iraq policy and money is not an issue. It is unbelievable to listen to them talk about smaller less intrusive, fiscally responsible government and then watch what the republicans have done over the last eleven years. You can tell me anything, show me.

I guess it's OK for the Clinton's to speak what the CIA hand feeds them but when Bush does it he is a liar. These people bring hypocrisy to it's apex.
He has stuck to his word. Any country that supports, aides, or harbors a terrorist organization is an enemy of the United States.
By invading Afghanistan on Iran's eastern border and invading Iraq on Iran's western border he has effectively placed Iran on the ropes by forcing them to dump all their monetary energy into obtaining nukes. As a result they are on the verge of tapping into their social monies used to care for their mostly unemployed young adults in Iran. When they do this an uprising will occur and it will be supported by western operatives. Coupled with strong sanctions this will literally obliterate the foundation that the extremist regime stands on.

In effect GWB has taken out three terrorist sponsoring governments while sustaining the least amount of American casualties. History will show him as a visionary.

Your right, and this why the Neocons want to push this bill through just like the rest of them. Bush has really stolen from America. Bring the troops home and they can live in America, or die in Iraq. It is now George Bush's call with his veto.

As long as we hold still for it, it will continue to happen. We have people here who can't afford to see a doctor, or to buy proper food, but we can spend untold amounts of money to tear up other countries. Only!!! 627 more days of this dreadful administration. Best wishes

Make sure your representatives are aware of this information. They probably are but by letting them know you know they are more likely to act.

If you hate it so bad, then move to France. Of course the Pentagon has the highest budget since WWII. It is called war. That is what happends. Pentagon is the Department of Defense, so logically spending would go up.
