Most Americans don't support torture, because they remember POW's in Vietnam getting tortured.
The neocons still like the torture idea!

As long as they don't actually have to know anything about their existence or operation, some Americans still theoretically support secret torture camps.
They don't want to listen to cops who tell them about the relative unreliability of information gained from tortured prisoners.
They also don't want to have to be kept awake for three solid days in alternately freezing and broiling conditions under glaring lights with no windows, because then they would no longer be able to scoff at the notion that that constitutes torture.
They are also unable to answer this one simple question: How long should you torture someone who genuinely doesn't have any of the information you are seeking?

I don't think many Americans support this. I wonder if it's okay to torture terrorists now, will it be okay to torture anyone the government wants soon. These things have a way of spreading once they've started and that scares me.

The ends do not justify the means.
Educated people know this. They know history. And they are aware what happens once you start down that slope. For examples, see Vietnam and WWII.
I believe this is one of the fundamental differences between the right and left at the moment. The right believes the ends justify the means, while the left does not.
Allowing torture means we are hypocrites only paying lip service to human rights. This means that we shouldn't be surprised by the torutre others apply to us. If we choose to do things like piss on th Geneva conventions in our pursuit of terrorism, then we should not expect anyone else to abide by such rules.
Ends justifying the means is what leads to Stalinism, Nazis, and other such groups coming to power. Ends justyfying the means implies no accountability. It's essentially a blank chek to commit atrocities in th name of achieving your goal.
I wish more people understood this fundamental concept. But they don't.

Not all of us Andy R.. as you would seen by my posts and those of many, many other freethinking honest patriotic Americans. Unfortunately we have this 26%, loudmouth, rotten to the core minority that is giving this great country a bad name.
Hopefully, some of what they support will come back to them at some time.

Torture is an absolutely horrible way to get information from a captive. All that ensures is that they're going to tell you what they think you want to hear to make it stop.
Torture only works when any answer will do, regardless of its accuracy.

I support torture camps, but not secret ones.
Why should they be "secret"? I want our torture camps to be widely known. Give the terrorists something to think about before they try their antics.
