People have always binge-drunk. It's just that today, men consume more lager than ale and often of a higher potency, causing behavioural problems. Women have a series of Breezer type drinks now as well that are easier to consume. They also have greater liberty than at any time in the past. The reason 'binge' drinking is an issue is because it has been held up to be one. It is a valid issue; an incredibly valid issue, but one that didn't exist in our collective consciousness before mass media and communication. Even just 10 years ago. It existed in reality, but as media hyperbole it didn't develop until about 2000 approx. Also, a lot of the issues that make binge drinking undesirable and infamous, namely crime, arise from the drinking itself, not the quantity consumed in a small frame of time. Drink driving for example, was incredibly less punitive in the 60s and 70s, a policeman likely to say 'try driving left of the middle white line sir' rather than it being a more serious criminal offence like today. Our fathers regularly drunk and drove on 5 pints plus! There was seriously less stigma attached to drink driving. That's why they are the category most likely to be caught drink-driving (50-70 year olds). My father until recently thought it was a '2pint limit'. He's not irresponsible, it's a legacy of his life experience. By attributing binge drinking to various criminal offences, there is also an attempt to make it socially taboo. We also have a very workaholic culture, compared to the continent. That is to say whether we actually work hard or not is irrelevant, we all perceive that we do (we may well do or not) and all perceive of a 'living for the weekend' attitude.

So long as you don't try Bilge drinking you'll be alright, mind you given you're a great white you might do just that.
