Depends on how you are traveling if you are flying YES. If you are going by boat NO. You might want to apply for one anyway as they are now taking about 10 weeks to get.

Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card, Form I-551, if applicable.

As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries."

If you are a US citizen and flying to the Bahamas, YES you will need a passport. If you are going on a cruise and departing from a US port and returning to a US Port NO passport needed. You will need 2 forms of ID. PhotoID and your birth certificate with a raised seal.
It is taking about 10-12 weeks right now to get a passport, my advise is apply now. They are good for 10 years.I use my passport for domestic travel too.
good luck

If you are flying there, yes.

If you're going by ship you will need a passport, or your birth certificate and drivers license (or other government issued photo id). This will change in 2008, and you'll need a passport then.
