It looks like my meter may have been broken since day 1 (~3 years). I never noticed b/c payments were on automatic draft from bank, electric company never noticed either. Meter began with reading of 300 and currently reads 301--per electric company. When I look @ the meter it reads 299! Now they tell me they have to research it and will let me know how much I owe. Can they really get a reading for 3 yrs? Is there a way I can protect myself from the big $$ making electric company?

this depends on style of meter....there are two types...old style has wheel that turns and faster wheel moves the more power you use and it will have four or five dials above it the tell the amount of kilowatts used ....new style has readout that tells you how many kilowatts you used and will change only when you use a kilowatt of power...since they measure all power usage from a certain area they can figure out how much power was used by everybody in that area...then they can deduct what everyone else used and tell you exactly what you used.....this is how they find out how people hook up illegally to their power system

You should be able to see the digits or dial pointers moving when there is an electrical loading or even a pulsing light(depends on meter type) I would suggest that you power supplier might estimate your usage from previous bills if the meter is not working. Better tell the supplier you might have a fault though, there could be a risk of a fire or electric shock.

All old style geared meters have a horizontal disc that spins when the power is drawn; higher the load, faster the disc rotates. How many revolutions count for 1 kw hr (unit) is written on the base of the meter face.

Occasionally, it does happen that the disc does not rotate because of friction, corrosion or misalignment. In this case you get free power!

the little wheel on the inside will be moving, Call the electric Co and explain to them about your kilowatt meter. They should send someone to repair it , that is if it wasn't turned off for late charges-------- and if it was , then you will have to pay the late charges before it can be turned on or repaired

read the bill from the electric Co. and it should have what they charge. And if they charged you for something that you wasn't using , you should get it back.

On most meters you can see the disc turning. If it is not working, at the end of the billing period they will estimate the useage based on history of your use.
