The difference between people who burn the flag to retire it and people who burn a flag to protest the nation is the thoughts that are going through the people's heads.
Boy scouts and military burn hundreds of flags every year to retire them just like we cremate people's bodies. If we make flag burning illegal for the purpose of protest, then we are arresting people for having indecent thoughts against the nation.
90% of the flag burning that activists point to as a reason to stop burning flags are already illegal as arson. People are not allowed to destroy other people's property so that undercuts 90% of the argument against stopping the burning of flags.
The few hippies that buy flags to burn them in protest and burn flags legitimately aren't worth the effort. Most of them are burning flags in response to the anti-flag burning effort. So if people would give up on trying to change the first amendment most of the current flag burning wouldn't happen anyway.
In a nutshell, it is a pointless effort to protect the flag.

There's some debate on flag burning as a form of protest.
It has been ruled by the Supreme Court that flag burning is a form of speech, and as such is protected by the First Amendment to the Constitution.
There are those who want a Constitutional Amendment prohibiting flag burning.
I hope you realize that you are also being asked for YOUR opinion. That is, you are being asked to think about this issue, and say what you think about it and why.

I would make the case that protecting the country itself and the ideals that the flag stands for, such as the constitution, is far more vital than protecting the flag itself. The flag is just a piece of cloth that someone in Taiwan sewed together. What it represents is what's actually worth fighting for.

There are specific written rules for handling the American flag. If you buy one of those flags that you can fly outside your house they come with a booklet containing these rules.

I have relatives who have gone through West Point with distinguished military carriers and I have to go to their graves to stop them from spinning with the way this country has been invaded by the Bush crime family and AIPAC.

This Flag is a direct representation of our country and people, and should be protected and defended the same. Those that disgrace our flag are disgracing this country and all those men & women who fought and died for it, and it should not be tolerated.

It is a symbol, NOT a diety. Praying to it won't get you to heaven and wrapping yourself in it will not make you right.
After the terrible things the current administration has done
in it's name, the symbol is really tarnished.
Those 1,200 dead prisoners in Afghanistan
Abu Grahib and GITMO have done more to desecrate our flag than some college kid burning it.
