How do you solve an equation or inequality

1. I x + 2I = 6

2. I 2x - 3I + 4 = 17

3. I 3x - 7I = -2

4. I x - 5I - 6 = 4

5. I 3x - 1I = 7

First, see if there even is an answer (absolute values cannot be less than zero, so problem 3 is impossible).

Then get the absloute value part by itself if it isn't already. Then write and solve two different equations, one with a positive answer and one with a negative answer, since both would work.

Example 2: I 2x - 3I + 4 = 17

add -4 to both sides: | 2x - 3 | = 13

write 2 equations: 2x - 3 = 13 or 2x - 3 = -13

solve each by adding 3 to both sides then dividing both by 2

2x = 16; x = 8 or 2x = -10, x = -5

Check by plugging each answer in

Do them like that

Because it's absolute value, the contents of the abs val. bars are automatically POSITIVE.

Knowing this, you can set each of these equations to their respective postive and negative.

1) I x + 2I = 6
x + 2 =6 AND x + 2 = -6
x = 4 AND x = -8

2) fIrst subtract that 4 from both sides giving you
|2x-3| = 13
2x-3 = 13 and 2x-3 = -13
2x = 16 and 2x = -10
x = 8, x = -5

i hope this helped, and it will work for the rest of the problems.

Simplify the equation so that the absolute value is alone on one side. Then set the value in the absolute value equal to the other side of the equation and the opposite of the other side of the equation forming two equations.

l x + 2l = 6
x + 2 = 6
x + 2 = -6
x = 4, -8

For 1. you do the opposite of the operation which in this case is + so you would - 2 from 6 which is 4. To check it you just add back in 4 to 2 and u would get 6. x = 4. Hope this helps !!!!!!!!!!!

And, as I look at it, number 3 simply doesn't make sense. But I'll do the first one.

|x+2|=6 means that either
x+2=6 or
x+2=-6
so the possible answers are
x=4 or
x=-8

Now, **you** get busy and do the rest of them. Math is like any other sport. You won't get good at it by setting around watching someone else play ☺
