1996 Chevy Lumina sedan won't start at times. It's not the battery, there is power, and it's not out of gas. It seems to be something to do with the security device in the key, as though the security system is not reading it. Sometimes it will start fine, and other times it won't start for weeks. It seems to be a common problem with these vehicles, any simple fix?

we put the key in, turn it, and hear nothing. it's not the battery, because the lights automatically come on, and we can hear the noise you get when the key is in and the door is open. it used to eventually start up within 15-20 minutes, but now is more stubborn, refusing to start for weeks at a time.

sound like the ignition switch is bad. dont think a wire is broken. either replace the cylinder at a dealer or, and you didnt hear me say this as a gm tech, you can measure the resistance of the pellet on the key and go to radio shack and buy the diodes that will when added together will measure the same.(will need soldered together) and put it in line with the two wires of the sensor. this way it will always see the amount of resistance it needs. this is the cheapest way, will require some technical knowledge, a DVOM, little time, and about 10 dollars.

If you could give a more detailed explanation of what is happening when you turn the key to start your car.
1) Nothing happens?
2) You hear a "click", but nothing else?
3) You hear the starter turning, but the engine doesn't turn?
4) The starter turns the engine, but the engine won't start up?
5) The engine turns over, but very slowly.
6) the engine turns, but there's an awful banging noise?
