Hey I used that on my kids all the time. And it was true. I lived on a farm and we had to walk down a half mile lane to a dirt road and then walk a mile to the corner where the bus would come to pick us up. The bus would not come up the road because of the danger of being stuck in the snow as only the main concession roads were plowed early in the morning. We wore foot wear though. Life was tough back then but we had fun.

My parents were both city folks, so they never had to go that far to school. But my mom tells me sometimes how she was often sent on errands, even for no good reason at all. My grandfather had a pub, he would do all kinds of things like in the morning he'd need no ice when the vendor came by (smaller businesses didn't have freezers so a vendor came with blocks of ice), then he didn't need it and an hour later he'd sent my mom 'cause he wanted some anyhow... not once but very, very regularly... similar things with my grandmother who'd forget stuff at the store not once but often. She was from a generation when it was pretty normal to use kids as a sort of errandboys (or girls). Of course I had to do some chores or store runs, but she didn't use her history in the sense this expression is usually used in ('shut up and don't complain, it was worse for us).

Haha! Yeah, I think alot of parents like to tell their kids things like that. But the sad part is...my Mom actually DID have to walk about 1-1/2 miles to school, from about the age of 7 til she was in Jr. High.....many times in the snow!

No. It never snowed where they grew up but they used to tell me they walked 12 miles in weather so hot, the ground burned their feet.

yeah, I remember my mom saying this! I also remember the story my aunt told us all about having to be put on a sled hooked up to a snow mobile during after a blizzard hit to go to the hospital to give birth. She always bring that up when someone in the family is having a baby!

LOL..........Nope, my parents both went to school in the south. But I remember having to walk the long dirt road to my school bus top, and freezing my legs off until the bus arrived. Never remembered to mention it to my kid when she flew out the door for her "waiting" bus though. Darn it! ;-)
