..they hear them...their sense of hearing is unbeleiveable..that's why you can never sneak up on one and catch it!..

Birds are capable of detecting sounds well outside of the frequency range
humans can detect, particularly at the lower end. It is my undestanding
that birds can actually hear the insects moving under the ground, and
can zero in on them that way.

Different birds use different senses to detect worms. Robins use eyesight, other birds can sesne the worm's vibration and some birds can smell the worm.

when a bird hops on the ground the vibrations it makes are similar to rainfall, so the worms come out of their holes so as not to drown and the bird gets the worm....
same technique fishermen use to catch worms by gentle tapping with a rake..

do no longer understand with regard to the respond above mine. interior the morning, the floor remains damp from dew. Worms will come to the outdoors. while it gets warmer, they bypass back underground the place this is cooler and would have extra moisture. yet like somebody mentioned, this is basically a saying. reliable element they'd bypass to crapdonalds to consume :D.

My understanding of how they do this has more to do with their ability to feel the ground under their feet and can sense the movement of worms.
I don't think hearing has anything to do with it.

They have very good hearing. I also think they can feel small vibrations in the earth.

Believe it or not, they listen for them. Ever watched Robins? Not talk, movements.
