I was just thinking about getting posterboard and then drawing the lines on that, and putting up hoops and the backboard out of cardboard. But this project needs to be really good. So help me out. Thanks!

One of my classmates made one out of two small pizza boxes. She used one pizza box for each half of the court. She covered the boxes with construction paper and "drew" the lines with glitter glue. You could just use a marker if you don't want to use the glitter. Then she made the goal posts out of pipe cleaners. You can get the pipe cleaners in the craft section at walmart or at Michaels or AC Moore.
You could also use a shoebox lid in the same way.

I like Wolfman's idea of making it in a aquarium or tall box, but the floor could be simpler than concrete. In fact, aren't most basketball courts made from wood?

If so, you could simulate a wood floor by doing a "faux wood" technique with paint on something smooth, flat and large enough to put in the bottom... could even be posterboard etc.

Let me see if I can find a quick lesson on making faux wood:
...there are a bunch of them here**:
http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLC,GGLC:1969-53,GGLC:en&q=how+to+make+faux+wood+paint
(you wouldn't have to use any faux wood grain tools though... simple streaks should be fine).

You could also go to the trouble of cutting the faux wood into long strips, then cutting those crosswise a few times to make individual boards, then gluing the boards next to each other, and some end to end, to get the darker spaces between the boards, or perhaps just draw the spaces on the solid faux wood with a dark brown pen/marker)
...positioning the boards sorta like this, but without the fancy graining

Then just paint your regulation lines on top of the floor in the proper colors, add the backboards and nets, maybe make a basketball from orange clay (draw black lines on it) to glue somewhere inside the scene. Could perhaps make a few simple benches for the sides too. Maybe even a few footprints on the floor if you want to get fancy.

**the basic idea is to paint your surface completely with the lightest color of the wood... let it dry.... then paint over that with a darker color (will be the grain markings) and while that paint is wet, use a wide bristle-type brush that's DRY to lightly stroke down the length of the wood (that should leave streaks behind)... let dry when it looks good . . . (acrylic paint might be best)

How about making one in a fish tank, use the metal casings from 2 pens as the posts for the basketball nets. See if you can get 2 tiny fish nets from a pet store to use as the basketball nets. You could use leggo for the floor of the basketball court, unless you can find some concrete mix to use. If you can a bit of concrete mix then you can use that as the base of the basketball court and then paint the lines on it.
