sand pit for the kids?

Mortar sand is simply washed and screened. I buy washed river sand all the time to make my potting mix at the nursery. You can incorporate it into your garden to make the soil drain better. You can fill in low spots or holes in your yard with sand. Make a sand box for the kids (a really big one). There are alot of things you can do with a big pile of sand. Just don't let the cats near it - a real stinker. People who say you can't use it have no idea what they are talking about. You could even give some away to your neighbors.

If your garden has a clay soil dig it in as it's one of the best ways to improve drainage and improve the soil, the type of sand doesn't matter, a light sprinkling on the lawn from time to time helps in some way to combat moss, it is also useful to have some during the winter to avoid slipping on ice especially if you have a drive. Although not your question if you just want rid of it put it in the free 'ads. section of you local paper and you can be sure that someone will take it away.

Personally, I think builder sand shouldn't be used in children areas. It is usually harder and has bits of silicone (glass) mixed in.

The suggesting to use it in pots or mixed with clay soil if you have it are not bad ideas. You might use it in the bottom of a raised bed to help with drainage. Or other drainage projects. Alot depends on the amount and your lot. You may need to get someone to haul it away.

This has to be sieved to remove fines below 1.5 mm size, and washed free of dust. This sieved, washed sand when mixed with compost makes a good, free draining potting mix for house plants and for filling planting pits in the garden for those plants in the ground. It can also be used for coconut tree or palm tree planting.

Many kids areas can use it. Sandboxes, under swingsets and jungle jims. You may also want to plant veggies such as carrots that need soft soil in deep areas. Sand will also help for drainage.
