Yes. Sour cream can go bad. It can get mould on it, or it can go "slimmy". The mold is obvious. Generally, when it has gone slimmy, it developes an odour that is very obvious. As for an unopened container from 1996, just on general principles, I would not use it. It may still be good, but I wouldn't use it myself. It will be interesting to know what you find when you open it. Let us all know!

Sour cream can definately go bad. Usually, there's this pink mold/fungus looking thing mixed in with the sour cream. If it's not pink, then it may be green or blue or any other abnormal color including yellow. Either way, whether or not there is something in your sour cream when you open it or not, yours is WAYYYY too old. I would just throw it out without even opening it.

Yes, sour cream is a dairy product! It will absolutely go bad. 1996? This is not something I would want to consume. What you have is soured sour cream.

It goes bad, when I see little dots of blue mold on it. However, I wonder if that would even hurt me, since it is sour cream.:) However, I toss it out at that point. Check the expiration date and go from there.

If so, how can you tell? Please answer soon, because I have an unopened container in the back of my refrigerator with an expiration date of April 1996.

Are you joking??!! It is over 10 YEARS old. Yes, it has an expiration for a reason and I'm surprised you didn't smell it for all this time.

1996? Geeze! And I thought I was bad about cleaning out my refrigerator! I'm surprised it hasn't grown legs and jumped into the garbage!
