After we moved in, we noticed that the house we bought had a patch of new texture on the living room ceiling and some discoloration along the seam of the drywall there (that showed through the original texture that had not been re-touched). We did not think much about it, as the disclosure said that there had been a leak in the roof that had been repaired. However, a few months later the texture cracked and started chipping off, right along the seam. We got up there after a rain storm to feel if there was any dampness, but we just cannot tell (it is not wet or dripping). As this is a cathedral ceiling and the roof is right above it (no attic in this area), we can't look for a leak in the attic. We now have also noticed a very light discoloration along a second seam in the drywall further up the slope of the ceiling (it may have been there all along). We hate to call a roofer for no reason – but I would hate to leave a leak if there is one. Any suggestions?

Give it a couple days to dry out if it's wet but from your question your not really sure so let a few sunny days do it's thing. If you can get a ladder to reach it doesn't have to be a step cause you say it's along the seam just put some kinda bootie on the end of the ladder to prevent damage to your walls. Then buy yourself a aerosol can of Zinssers "Cover Stain" and spray the stain to get rid of the yellowish brown stain, lightly spray just enough to cover the stain this way it will blend in to your existing ceiling color and won't have to end up painting a ceiling. Once you've done that wait for the next rain, if the stain doesn't come back you've just got to touch up your wall, you've spent $6 vs. $$$$$$$. Good luck Les the painter

Leaks on cathedral Ceilings can be tricky, the leak is probably at the peak of the roof and running down until it hits something to redirect the water. You may be able to find it from the out side by looking for deteriorated shingles. The wind my be blowing it up under the shingles as well. Chances are it is at the peak or around a vent or moon roof in the ceiling.

Cut out a section of the drywall. spray water on the roof where the spot is and check for leaks. If no leaks, the its probably moisture from humidity. Install a vent in the gable ends of your roof.
