If you plan to thow it in the garage, take the hard drive out and smash it with a hammer... then proceed.
A simple reformatting of your hard drive will not be enough for someone who knows how to get old information out.
If you don't feel comfortable with your own skill level , or products on the market-in erasing the hard drive before tossing it, or giving it to someone else- physically destroy your hard drive is the only way to have complete peace of mind.

I took mine to an OLD FOLKS HOME, after I put on a few nice games like CRIBBAGE and a great JOGSAW puzzle game. I told them that they didn't have to connect to Internet right away and maybe some of the residents would enjoy even playing solitaire on the screen instead of a card table.
A month later the Home admin. phoned me to say it was so popular they had to have an "appointment schedule" for the old PC. It seemed to be great therapy for those wonderful old people.

Format the hard drive to erase all data on it & then donate it to any local organisation in your area that helps needy children or low income families.
The Salvation Army & Sun Youth are good examples.

Get your files saved in a USB hard drive first. Then, remove the motherboard and change to a new one.

keep the hard drive, and just sell, throw away or give a way the rest of the PC.
i've kept all my hard drives due to sensative information being on them, i destroy them myself and make sure they can no longer be used.
its also possible to donate your PC, might want to look into that.

Get your files off the computer and defrag your harddrive, taking all of the old files off. Then you can sell it and get some money :)

Sell it on eBay!! You'll get some money off it. Just use a program like killdisk to get rid of your files first.

Don't throw it out. There are chemicals in there that should not go into landfills. Check with your city. They probably have an electronics disposal program.

Not many outlets for "old" computers...just remember to get your personal info off the hard drive BEFORE letting it go anywhere............................ Download it on CD's. CLEAN YOUR HARD-DRIVE.
Our city is recycling old electronics for Arbor Days...check with your city.
