It is a common misconception that the Mayan's believed that the world would end. They believed that life moves in cycles and around every 6480 years(i believe but this probably isn't the exact time frame) there is some sort of cataclysmic event, if you go back 6480 we are told that this is when civilisation was born, roughly, go back another 6480 the plystacene(misspelled) era ended and 6480 years before that the preceeding era ended, this is all verifiable even tho i'm getting the numbers and names wrong. scientists can trace this back about 25000 years and every time something happens. so 2012 is the conclusion of the current 6480 and also the conclusion of the 25000+yr cycle of the zodiacs, we will next be entering the aquarian age which is associated w/ attaining higher conciousness. the mayans seem to know a lot and if anyone says well why did they die it is b/c the belief is that we are all source energy that are eternal beings, our dna is essentially energy, and you can research that. the long and short of it is there will be a 2013 but maybe (and hopefully) we will all be better off by them. we are in the process of gaining this higher conciousness now, how often have we or others said there isn't enough time in the day or that children are growing up faster now than ever before, it's all relative
we also now know that the precessional equinox will end at this time and the poles of the earth 'may' switch but i don't think that will happen. most likely the earth will experience a few more natural catastrophies due to increased solar activity (which is the real cause of global warming) and the temporary decline in strength of the magnetosphere.
The year 2012 will also be marked by the near-Earth crossing of the Asteroid Eros, Superbowl XLVI, and the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth, just as a tidbit

First of all, it's the Mayans.
Secondly, if someone says something like "the world will come to an end", it is important to ask "How do you know this?" Those who say that the end of the Mayan calendar is the end of the world are either just repeating what others have told them, or they are making it up. They may have convinced themselves that their "psychic premonitions" are real, but there is no reason to expect that anything will in fact happen.
Remember Y2K? The world was supposed to end back then as well.
If you need something to worry about, worry about global warming.

First, I think it's the Mayan calendar.
Second, I agree with Gene. I have an old calendar on my wall that ends on December 31, 2006. As far as I know, that wasn't the end of the world.
Third, NO end-of-world scenario could be predicted (accurately) to occur on a specific date. And if some sort of astronomical cataclysm was predicted to occur on that date, it would be in scientific publications and journals, not just exiled to a life of floating around on the Internet.

According to the maya the 5th world that we live in (there were four others with the mud people, monkey people, etc) will come to an end. The maya have an intricate system of calendars the longest of which ends on the above date (during the winter solstice). Based on information so far found this world will end in fire and earthquakes.
Maurice Cotterell has an extremely interesting book regarding his theory (and I believe the best theory) for what will scientifically occur on this date. Basically the sun will send out an abnormally large solar wind that will not be able to be deflected by our electromagnetic shield and the resulting effect will be that the world flips with the equator being the pole and the poles becoming the equator. This kind of a shift would naturally result in tectonic movement (i.e. a helluva lotta earthquakes and volcanic eruptions!)
hope this answers your question! if you have anymore send me a message! piccacountrygirl@yahoo.com

Its actually the Mayan calendar that will end then. People are speculating that it will be a doomsday and that we only have five years left to live. However, many believe that either nothing will happen or there will be a minor catastrophe.

Absolutely nothing. It was the end of their old cycle and they never got around to doing one for the next cycle. You see, they had such a good view of the future that they never even saw their own extinction. I have a Barnes & Noble calendar that runs out in Feb 2008. Maybe that's the end of the world.
