My mother has asked me to post this question on her behalf hoping someone can help her out. She has a 9 month old son and has been having problems getting him to sleep at night. He wakes up every 45 minutes wanting to be held(at least thats what she thinks.) He cries and cries and when she picks him up he goes right back to sleep only to wake up again 45 minutes later. I have suggested putting together a nighttime routine for him thinking that would help and she said she is going to try. I have reason to believe it has something to do with his diet. She feeds him grilled cheese, lolipops and anything else that is around the house, whihc I have always disagrred with. She only gives him 4 ounces of formula at a time and not very often. I know that a baby his age still requires formula or breast milk(until 1 year.) My daughter who is almost 5 months eats a 7 ounce bottle 4-5 times a day and he is twice her age and eats less than half as much. Could he be hungry?

Has anyone else experienced something like this? If so, what did you do, or what can be done. Thanks

He probably is HUNGRY!! Plus sugar (lollipops) will mess with his sleep. At his age he should have 7-8oz of milk. Plus breakfast, lunch & dinner AND snacks. Snacks like cherrios, gerber puffs, fruit, gerber cookies. Have a heart to heart with her. Be nice and tell her what might be wrong not what you think. Some people have issues with taking other peoples advice. Good luck!

Make sure that he has a night light for one. Why does she only feed him 4 ounces at a time? She should give him a full size bottle, and when he's done, he'll let her know. Yes, he could be hungry. She should be feeding him baby foods and wash it down with milk, and make sure that he gets a little water and juice here and there. He may be constipated from the cheese!

Formula with cereal would be a much better choice for him than greasy grilled cheese. It would probably make his tummy nice and full and help him sleep better.
Your Mom should probably ask the doctor about a pediatric nutritionist. I'm sure they could give her some insight on what she should be doing. Hopefully since she has asked you for help she realizes something is wrong and will be willing to take advice.

If a child keeps waking up alot that means that he is hungry or ill. In this case he needs to be fed more milk formula. You are right she is suppose to feed him formula until a 1 year old.

Could be colic. But it definitely could be his diet. Sugar is not good for babies...and 9 months old is not a good age to eat grilled cheese and solid foods.

Has she tried asking her pediatrician for advice? I kinda went through the same thing, my son would cry so much all the time and come to find out he had colic. My mother-in-law gave me some medicine from Mexico to give to him and it worked he started sleeping better and would cry less often. My advice talk to the pediatrician. And encourage her to stay away from the sugars especially at night, we all know what sugar does to us, makes us hyper. Good Luck!

He should still be on baby food. Tell your mom that she might want to take him to the pediatrician to make sure that he doesn't have colic. Go with her and let the Dr. know about his daily routine and feeding habits. He may need to get hit digestive tract checked, but most parents don't like to have their kid tell them what to do.

yes when babies are hungry they wake up in the night. She should feed him blended fruits or cereal (blended) before he goes to bed so that he won't wake up. She could also give him a bath so that he will be tired before bed. His diet does sound rough, and maybe could be too harsh on his stomach. She should try baby food, mashed fruits and cereal.
