recent examples of Bhopal and gujrat has struck the whole nation that the individual has no right of choice for theirs life partner. How long we have to sustain with this taboo. Firstly it has to be mandatory for the law makers ( The Netas ) that they have to marry their daughters and sons to different religion and caste to spread the message of brotherhood and equality in India. Because they are the first people who claims to be a secular and anti castism. How many of netas has done inter religion marriages. Infact they lives on the issues of pariahs, castism, religion and so on.

When you say that in India one is not free to do inter caste/religion marriages, this statement is absolutely wrong as we have a matrimonial enactment that not only allows such marriages but even is well recognized not only in India but any where in the world as legal & valid. The Special Marriage Act, 1954 provides inter religious, inter caste, and inter nationality marriages in India. This is the only secular enactment that helps any Indian to go in any of the above mentioned form of marriage, if he/she fulfills the general condition of age, marital status, mental status & degree of prohibition as provided in section 4 of the said Act. No objection to such marriage is allowed if all the above mentioned conditions are fulfilled by the parties to such a marriage. Such marriage takes place before the marriage officer/registrar who issues a marriage certificate to this effect, such marriage certificate is sufficient proof of the marriage & is recognized in India as well any other country of the world. As far what happened in Bhopal & Gujarat, as far Bhopal case is concerned the parties to such a marriage never took the step of getting married under this enactment I mentioned above but the man changed his religion & got married according to the Hindu form of marriage under the Hindu Marriage Act,1955, this provoked some Hindu as well Muslim religious organizations & the whole issue got blown up, had they both married under the Special Marriage Act,1954 without changing their religion at least for the purpose of marriage no one would have bothered so much about it as there exist not one but may cases where such inter religious marriages have took place between even well know personalities & no one ever bothered from either of the community to object to their marriage, this morning I was reading in newspaper comments of famous film actor Nasseruddin regarding this who being Muslim Married a Hindu Lady. What provoked the religious organization in the Bhopal case was the conversion issue which this organization took as a mocary of their religious sentiments. Now as far Gujarat issue is concerned the girl in this case is not of marriageable age as she is not 18years or above hence she is not legible to marry this man & they both eloped from Surat & went to Mumbai for the purpose of marriage for which they were not age wise legitimate at least the girl, so this issue got provoked in press & amounted to infringement of law by the man by taking away the minor girl from the lawful custody of her parents. I hope now you understand the legal implications in both these cases. Now why these leaders of political parties get their children married in inter religion or inter caste marriages is concerned, I fully agree with you as to teach other is very easy but to follow oneself the same is very difficult. Let these politicians come out with such marriages & let people follow them that will be the best way to encourage such form of marriages.

Hindu religion is based on caste hierarchy. This caste system was abslolutely necessary some 1000 to 2000 years ago.
With the barbaric invasion of Muslim kings it become all the more necessary to keep the purity of Hindu religion.
Now it is not so much necessary. Therefore the rigours of
caste system is less.In every society there is cast hierarchy
in different forms.Marriage is a personal matter, there is no bar in India to marry as you like. But you cannot force the society to accept your marriage. In my opinion 50% of Indians support caste system.

1. The cast division has been there from a long time, and even if many don't like it, not much can be done, cuase you are born already under some division.
2. Depends on your up bringing. If you have conservative parents, it is more likely from childhood you are already brainwashed.
3. Though it started out with good intention, later on it go corrupted very badly and is now misused: Politicians and others are using it to further divide people.
4. Converting to Christianity or Islam is no panaceia. All uman beings are same. In christianity, converted christians from lower castes of Hindu, will not be 'allowed' to marry. For example a Konkani converted chiristian will not marry some one from Dalit community, though tecnically allowed.

We are free to marry anyone in India, but social pressures won't permit it easily

Nobody can stop anybody from marrying out of caste. Things are taking place in good numbers and it's only few cases ,where problems are created by some ,which are highlighted. Gradually and gradually if young men continue undetered ,the politicians will have to fall in line. After all politicians have to survive on mass appeal and the trends. With urban culture spreading fast the netas will have no footing if they appose their younger ones.

Our opinions on what others should or shouldn't do are irrelevant. In civilised countries, people continually ignore apparent social barriers in order to get married. It may mean that a lot of ignorant people surrounding them put pressure on their marriage, both intentionally & unintentionally. We have no right to make life even more difficult for others who are doing something we may be uncomfortable with. Their marriage is their choice not ours. If the union would be capable of producing children then it is legitimate as a marriage, no matter what others may think. The fact that these marriages are biologically possible should lead us to demolishing racial/caste/religious & social barriers and the systems that create them. Sadly, few people are prepared to step outside the social/racial/caste/religious boundaries that were always part of their childhood security & objectively examine their value.

There are no figures available as to how many? Yet they are increasing every day. Over reaction by a few self styled leaders who try to pose as custrodian's of culture is at most an abberation that may not last very long.
Respect for humans and their decisions is all, what most religions preach.
