Originally, galvanized steel. Of late, I have seen it made of rigid fiberglass in a plastic covering. It is usually round and has a wire coil on the outside of the fiberglass and under the plastic to hold it's shape. The materials may change as the ducts get further from the Heating/AC source.

Galvanized sheet metal is the most common material used. Aluminum is sometimes used too. Insulated flex-duct is sometimes used for individual runs (6")... it's easier for one person to install. Duct board is also used (fiberous insulation board covered with foil on one or both sides).

There are several materials used in the construction of ductwork, thin sheet steel is the most common because of its strenght, rigidity and low cost. Aluminum is another and there are several kinds of flexible pipe available with and without insulation and some have quict connects on each end. Application is where the choices start.
