Nothing, actually. But a meteor is what an asteroid becomes if it enters the Earths atmosphere and some part of it reaches the ground intact. If it totally burns up in the atmosphere, it's called a meteorite. Usually the word 'asteroid' is used to describe a very large 'rock' in orbit around the Sun. But we don't want one of those hitting the Earth. That's what whacked the dinosaurs some 65 million years ago.

A meteor is an asteorid or other small debris that is falling or has fallen on earth, while the asteroid is still in space.

asteroid is a big potato shaped rock (carbon and metals ) which are mostly exists between mars and jupiter with the size of 500 km to 100 meters but meteor is a small particles ( 1cm to 5 meters) which remains from the tails of the comets and we they get close to earth they contact with the atmosphere and burn so we can see a nice bright trace in the sky

Size and distance...asteroids are larger and rarely come close enough to Earth to actually hit it. Meteors are smaller and come through our atmosphere quite frequently (though they tend to burn up before they hit the ground).
