it depends on the dance and the competiton.
usually your number is either considered solo (one person), duo (two people), pas de deux (two people if ballet), standard 3-20 people, or a production is 21 and up and has to be over 4 minutes long.

There can be 8-10 dancers for a dance competition if its the same sex competing in it. But, if its mixed, then it should be 10 people i.e. 5 groups of a pair of 2 dancers at the most. That way it becomes much more easier for judges to judge a dance competition and the audience to get to appreciated the dancers better.

What kind of competition are you talking about???
It definitely depends on that, but for a good show and to be judged fairly 12 dancers should be a good amount to work with.

it depends on the competition. i went to a competition last week and there were only 100 numbers in it. yesterday i went to one and there were 400 in it, and there are bigger ones too. the number ranges from probably like 100 or so to about 600???? only if its a REALLY REALLY big one that lasts more than a day.

it depends. also, are you talking about in each dance, or total?? all the competitions i've been to, there are different divisions for different sizes of groups, from solos to production numbers (like 50 people). so... yah. good luck!! i love competing!!!
