A woman, yes, but it isn't going to be Hillary. There are simply too many that can see right through her.
An African American, no.
While on the one hand, we have a viable candidate that has a shot, you have Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson. Their whole industry is founded on the concept that American whites are all (not "mostly", but "ALL") racists at heart. Never mind Condi Rice, Bush is a racist. Never mind his work on Sickle Cell Anemia, Imus is a racist. Never mind the fact that Al is personally responsible for inciting three racial incidents that caused the deaths of five people, one an innocent rabbinical student, and the destruction of the life of an innocent law enforcement officer, and participated in the 390 day hounding of three innocent college students. Everyone else is a racist and out to "get" the black man.
If Obama gets elected, it proves that Sharpton and Jackson are irrelevant, and they can't afford that.
Most of America is ready for an African American President, but Jackson and Sharpton are not, and that makes America not ready for it.

I'm sorry, why should a country need to be 'ready' for a leader who isn't a white male?
Not even counting the fact that a white male hasn't exactly done them much good in the past, why should it be about being ready? Who decided that that particular group of of people are the only ones who would be suitible as president?
What exactly constitutes as 'ready'? The only way that question should be asked would be say, if there were no women or african-americans in America, in which case, no it wouldn't be ready. But it has plenty of both, so it should be 'ready', yes.
Of course the fact this question is asked at all, I guess shows that America likely won't get either, obviously due to very close-mindedness, sexism and racism that's present, which I actually wasn't as aware of as a I should be. I know that candidates in any election aren't always voted on by what they believe in and whether they make a good leader, as it should be. Here in the UK, the different parties are divided and voted on alot by money/class. In the US i had believed it was moslty religion that led peoples opinions. But I guess I'm innocent enough to believe that their beliefs and their leadership should also be included in that decision. Race or Sex shouldn't be counted in the slightest in my mind.
How people can say 'Is America ready/not ready' or even voice an opinion one way or another, are basically placing some 'blame' on the country, when it's their own narrow-mindedness that leads the question. It's not about whether America is ready, it's about how the people in America vote. If people won't vote for a women or an african-american, that their own predujices, saying 'America isn't ready' is people just trying to displace their own predujices and adjusting the blame so they can delude themselves into thinking they aren't racist/sexist.
And now I've rambled on in an answer that will never get best answer and likely won't be read much because people don't like people arguing, so I'm going to stop and maybe not come into the politics section again! Always gets my back up.

I believe America is ready for a good president regardless of
race or sex. America has been through a lot within the last few years, and we've grown and learned because of it. I don't
think our current Prez is a bad man but I do believe he's surrounded by incompetent people that's given him bad info
on just about every importent issue that effect's America. It's a shame that our Prez will be define by the war and the lost of
many young lives because of bad info, the bumbleling response to the Katrina victims, etc.... but all of this imo is a direct response because of bad info. Yes America is ready for a good leader that's fair, firm, and just. A president with good forsight in knowing that what ever decision is made now, and what the effects and consequences it will have for the America people in the future. And that leader can be a woman, African American, or any other ethnic, including a white male. As long as that leader is a American with extraordinary leadership and surrounds theirselves with extraordinary people with extraordinary insight and info.Think
JFK, and Nixon, (minus the Watergate issue Nixon was a great leader) Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton. (minus the sex scandals Bill Clinton was also on point ) These
are great leaders we've have had in the past both Republican and Democrate that had what it took to keep America vertical and strong. And as a independent I respect
these presidents and most of their decisions. The verdict on
H. Clinton, and B. Obma is to soon to decide if they have the right stuff or not. The way they'll run their campaign will allow
us to see what they are working with.

America as a whole is not ready for a woman or African- American for president as evidenced by the last few elections. Most candidates have been selected and then elected by a small yet highly active group of people. Once larger percentages of the population participate in the elections, America will have candidates/presidents that truly reflect the population of the country.

this is the same place that makes a person(or race)do 5 years fed prison for 5 grams of crack and tell another person(or race) that you will get 5 years fed prison for 500 grams of powder(crack is made of powder) so if anyone believes a black man will survive the first year is crazy if (white) america is ready this would not be a question and that would not be a law!

It depends if you ask the educated, open-minded section of our country or the narrowed-minded racist sections where hate is bred on a daily basis.
I think we should be ready; we just need to persuade a few more areas a little better.

Welcome Ms. Clinton,
I believe the only way to clean up the government that MEN have created and screwed up is to have a woman run the house. like we usually do and with great success As Madam Speaker of the House said "it takes a woman to clean a house"
