sitting at the window, watching the droplets of rain fall from the sky and tap against his window. The tree outside is swaying gently, its branches waving ever so slightly from the wind, and channeling the water like tiny rivulets down to the sidewalk where is flows down the gutter and into the storm drain. He looks up at the sky and sees another rainbow starting to form. He has no idea how many he's seen in his life, but for some reason wonders if this may be his last one.
He thinks back to his own life, when he was younger, and how he met the woman who would become his wife and mother to his children. He thought of all the happy years they had, all the arguments over silly things, and how hey always managed to resolve their problems no matter how bad they seemed. He whispered her name.
"Yes," came her voice from behind him, "I'm here."
He turned slowly to her from his chair by the window, and saw her standing there, smiling at him. Her hair was perfect, as it always was, and she stood there holding out her arms to him. He smiled back at her and stood up, embracing her in his arms, and whispered in her ear, "I have always loved you."
"I have always loved you, too." she returned to him. "And I have waited for you just as I promised I would. Now it's time to go."
And with that, the old man breathed his last, a contented smile on his face as the rain continued to fall outside. He was now with his beloved and at peace.
