When I was a kid I really enjoyed blackjack (I was better than I am now!) but some other fun ones are gin/rummy, and 5 card draw poker (which can be played without betting chips if it's just the two of you).
As a side note, I would avoid the collectible card games like Yu-gi-oh because they are essentially a scam, since you have to keep buying more cards to hopefully get better ones, and they come out with expansion sets that you will have to buy in order to keep up with the other players. If he gets into it on his own and buys the cards with his own money, then great, but I doubt you would enjoy playing with him as much as a classic card game.

Go fish is always good because you learn card recognition if you want a good game for 1 person teach him clock patients and if you want 2 or more players I think trumps is also easy

About any card game is great, but go fish and rummy are classics.
My brother learned to count playing cards, he actually used to count - 8, 9, 10, jack, queen, king ace until my mom got him straightened out! ;)
