Pygmalion was a story or a myth about a sculptor who built a statue of his ideal woman and fell in love with it and pined over it (popularized by Ovid in Metamorphoses). Aphrodite, the Greek goddess, took pity on him and enlivened the statue and the sculptor, Pygmalion, married it.
The Pygmalion effect has the implication of making someone into an image that you have. Unfortunately, people usually have their own ideas and this does not work out. People have to sumit themselves to someone else will in order to fully satisfy them, and even then they may fail and the dominant person loses interest. My Fair Lady was a recent remake of this myth.
