My brother is renting a flat and since being there a strong sweet odour has become noticable. There was an elderly man in there and we think he had urinal incontinence.

There is most likely old fibre underlay below the carpet. I am steam cleaning the flat this weekend and am hoping for some ideas, I was thinking along the lines of using cheap white vinegar in hot water as a rinse once I have done the carpet with the steam cleaning detergent.

Cheers and Thanks in advance,
Shona

Use just one cup of White Vinegar to your cleaning solution, your carpet will come out clean and fresh. Or you can use two cups of White Vinegar to just plain water in the tank of your steam cleaner, your carpet will come out clean and fresh also. Good Luck !

I had the same problem with an apartment that I lived in. My smells came from pets from a tenant that lived there before me. I rented a steam cleaner and the water was totally black from dirt. After the floor dried, I use Febreeze on it and it took about a week of spraying the Febreeze, but it worked.

Don't use vinegar or your house will smell like a pickle factory. Buy a product for the steam cleaner that says it's formulated for tough odors. You can go to a pet store and get a very good product for pet urine odors called Nature's Miracle, it works the best of all.

Try baking soda. I think vinegar would just add to the smell.

You may be right.

You might succeed in "masking" the odor for a time, but it will return if it is in the underlayment.
