It's a day to graft our desires onto society and become socialised.

I don't know. I suppose because christians celebrate New Hallow's Eve? It's a small holiday. Why would you celebrate the Super Bowl if you were so inclined even though it wasn't your team playing? Besides, most atheists see it for what it is... just a recognized day. It's institutionalized love and simply another way to push the economy (buy gifts, jewelry, propose, etc.). Valentine (the saint(s)) has very little to do, if anything at all, with the modern day concept of the celebration. Not only that, no one can agree on the date, so now that people do in the west, that's pretty much proof that it is institutionalized and not for real. I had fun at Mardi Gras; does that mean I believe in lent?

Yes and no. some couples I know don't go out and give gifts, but other I know go barking mad with it. And some singles don't feel lonely or miserable, at least I don't.
I guess it depend on the people. But yes, it is a commercial cheat no matter how one views it.
I got even by going the next day and buying sweets at a great discount.

It's definitely commercial. In fact, commercialism seems to have taken over all major holidays. Look around the stores right now. They are full of marketing ploys for mothers day. These displays were set up as soon as they got the Easter merchandise out of the way. After mothers day they will start marketing fathers day, then independence day, then Halloween then thanksgiving and the big one Christmas. (Retailers begin merchandising for Christmas before summer is over) Consumers don't seem to mind being taken to the cleaners.

I prefer to celebrate and show appreciation for my loved ones every day. I believe Valentines Day has become a day to encourage high expectations, a false sense of romance and major disappointments - only profitting faceless, nameless and emotionless businesses that care only about the dollar and not the relationship.
I would much rather give and receive gifts 'just because' than to get them or give them under the pressure of obligation because 'it's the day!!!!'

Hate it, Hate it Hate it..... I'm in a couple and still don't appreciate it. You should love each other and give flowers etc. whenever to feel like it. Not be forced into showing some forced emotion because its a pre-determined day.
also the cost of everything goes up so much!!!! Commercial money grabbing

I've always thought Valentines Day was for love, but all kinds of it; that's why I thought in the elementary school, they give out cards to all there friends, and people take their family's out on this day. I guess the world doesn't agree with me as much...

It's a cheap trick by card companies to get more money out of us. I am in a serious relationship and we both decided not to buy anything for each other. Actually, I mentioned it and he sighed a sigh of relief! It's a sad time when the only day of the year we show our love for our partners is on one day the card companies chose! If my partner only did something special only on that day, i'd be worried. You should do romantic things whenever you feel like it.

Valentines day can be a very sobful day for single people you feel as if no one cares enough to get you something not even a card but you have to appreciatate your friends who are single and how they give you a valentine. you just have to make yourself feel happy and you won't be depressed . it doesn't only have to be for going out people because you love your friends too

You're right. An excuse for everything from CD's to underwear to be marketed as a Valentine's gift, and to rub it in your face if you're single. Are you only meant to show your partner your love for them on one day of the year? Ridiculous.

Oh yes, you can make whatever you want out of the holiday. But the pressure and the over-emphasis of the holiday does tend to make lonely outcasts of singles for a few days...
