I am giving below the effects of earthquake for Mercalli scale.The Richter scale is not directly connected with the destruction's.It gives you the amount of energy release during earthquakes.
Effect of Mercalli scale.

1. Detected by seismograph only
2. feeble noticed only by few people,
3. slight, similar to vibration from passing truck,
4. moderate, felt generally indoors, parked cars rock,
5. rather strong, felt generally, most sleepers wake,
6. strong, trees sway, furniture moves, some damage,
7. very strong, general alarm, walls crack,
8. destructive, weak structures damaged, walls cracks,
9. ruinous, some house collapse as ground cracks,
10. disastrous, many buildings destroyed, rails bent,
11. very disastrous, few buildings only survive, land slides,
12. Catastrophic, total destruction, ground forms waves.
