Clamp a piece of aluminum foil or aluminum roof flashing over the hole with two big stainless steel worm drive clamps. Home centers sell the same worm drive hose clamp types used on auto hoses that are much bigger for plumbing applications. You can daisy chain two of them together to make a bigger clamp. It works great on an exhaust or tail pipe too. Also, use a wire coat hanger to hold the pipes up to the body of the car to keep the exhaust from breaking loose.

Get a new muffler. The sole reason that mufflers crap out is rust, a normal eventuality. If you've got little holes showing then the inside is likely cancerous and hey, mufflers are cheap.

The parts store has exhaust patch you can wrap around the muffler that seals when it gets hot, but if the muffler has a hole, it's probably because it's rotted out inside and needs replacing. It usually happens because you take too many short trips that don't get the exhaust hot enough to burn the water out after you turn it off.

You've gotten your money's worth out of the exhaust system. My advice is to replace the exhaust system proper. Muffler repair tapes and puttys are snake oil. They don't work. Call around for these parts. Above all, stay away from the big chains (Big $$$). Stick with an independent shop.

Whitney Catalog, remember that one? They used to have aluminum tape that was sticky enough (so the spiel said under the nifty cartoon drawing listing the product). Usually exhaust systems that old are pure carbon keeping the rust looking like a pipe -- which is okay, until the next ice storm.

You're going to find a new exhaust replacement for a car like that pretty expensive.

You could have it patched by any of your local mechanics. Cheap and saves the cost of buying a new muffler for some time.

A patch will last 2 weeks or less. It isn't worth the trouble of putting it on. Trust me. I have tried it many times
